Nuaulu Male Initiation Pictures

Each Nuaulu clan holds a male initiation ceremony about every five years when they have several teenage boys ready for initiation.

Male initiates on their way to the forest where they are dressed in bark cloth and red cloth.

This time when teenage boys are given adult male clothing is called matahenne.

The ceremonial leader puts bead necklaces on each initiate.

When they are dressed up the initiates sit and chew betel with the ceremonial leader and the people who carried the ritual items for dressing them up to the forest.

The following day the initaties go around the village visiting various homes.

When the initiates go around the village visiting they are given plates and other items as gifts.

Here the initiates are gathered dressed in their red cloth and other ritual dress.

The initiates posed for this photo before taking off their ritual clothing.
